What is Affiliate marketing?
I've written it more in details in THIS POST, so let's not repeat ourselves too much. I'll focus on affiliate marketing pros and cons, but let's get something straight.
Affiliate marketing has grown into a multibillion-dollar industry during the last decade or so. It is creating real opportunities for creators and abusiness alike. It's one of the simplest ways to monetize your content and build partnerships with marketers and brands you love. And with over 62% of marketers planning to increase their influencer budget in 2026, this amazin trend is far from slowing down.

Affiliate marketing IS A BUSINESS
If you're treating and doing affiliate marketing as a hobby, that's fine. But expect hobby results.
It may pay for a dinner sometime, maybe even more than once. But that will be the extent of your success online.
If you treat it like a business, it can become your full-time job, but with less work and independence we all crave for. Just bear in mind that for when you run a business, it brings other "problems" and different challenges. Let's see some of them.
Affiliate marketing pros and cons
Like any endeavour, affiliate marketing also has its own set of perks and challenges in order to work as planned.

Affiliate marketing Pros
Affiliate marketing pros can be gathered in a short list:
- Easy to start
- No upfront costs
- Easy to experiment
- Passive income potential
- Real earning potential
Easy to start
Affiliate marketing is easy to start. I'm sure you've heard it before, maybe you have even tried it. Chances are you've been disappointed.
When you say something is easy to start, it sounds a bit too - well, general. It lacks comparison. Because it would be much more precise to say affiliate marketing is the easiest business to start online.
This involves starting a business, which is actually never really easy, especially if you have no experience at all. There are quite a lot of turning wheels that you have to master fast, otherwise you're operating on a hobby level.
This is probably the most appealing about affiliate marketing. You can actually start earning passive income from your content and most affiliate programs are free to join. Additionally, you don't really need any startup capital or inventory. You just need an audience that trust your recommendations - this could be a blog, a social channel, YouTube channel, whatever. But you have to create content and build the audience. You can easily launch affiliate marketing as a side hustle and scale it over time.
Realistically, affiliate marketing is no different than learning anything else. You just have to put some work and time in it before it works. But I definitelly agree that it's the easiest way to start earning online.
No upfront costs
To start earning with affiliate marketing, you don't have any upfront costs. You don't need inventory or startup capital. All you need is some sort of content you create, which can be just about anything - buyers are everywhere.
What you need is to join an affiliate program on one of the affiliate networks (like ClickBank, JVZoo, Warrior+, etc), get your affiliate links and promote them via your channels. You will earn commissions when someone buys through your links.
Easy to experiment
Since there are no real financial risks, you can easily experiment to see what works and what doesn't, making it easier to double-down on successful promos. This provides a relatively easy way to scale up, bringing the income to the wanted levels.
Passive income potential
Passive income means profits from something you create once, yet it brings you profits in the future.
For instance, you might write a super review of an evergreen best-selling product on Amazon for your blog and then publish a video about it on your YouTube channel. It will take you a few hours, maybe. But the content will stay there for years, possibly bringing revenue long after you forget about it.
Once you build steady relations and traffic and affiliate partnerships, those links will continue to work for you.
Real earning potential
One of the most appealing affiliate marketing pros is the fact that earning potential is almost unlimited.
As a new affiliate, your earning levels will depend on
- the size of your audience (the larger, the better)
- the amount of traffic you are able to send to your affiliate links
- the commission rates you get or negotiate with vendors
Commission rates vary widely, but are usually starting at 50% in most programs. They can go lower, such as 10-20% for recurring offers, but can also go higher with specific offers (75 or even 100%). The commissions are of course depending on the offer price, and high-ticket offers that are priced higher pay out higher commissions.
If you persist and build a business around affiliate marketing, life-changing earnings are definitelly reachable. Just don't expect that to happen in a week.
There are also lower commission rates, for instance with Amazon, where these are typically around few %. Additionally, there's usually a lot of competition for Amazon sales, so unless you have a large audience you'll probably have more troubles there. There are people earning thousands monthly on Amazon, though, but they're hardly beginners, and they usually invest a lot into traffic.
As a rule, you'll only get paid when sales are made through your link.
Affiliate marketing cons
Likewise, affiliate marketing cons are summarized as
- It's not really easy money
- It will not build your brand
- It's not a business you're in control of
It's not exactly easy money
There's no magic button that would earn commissions when you publish it on your channel. You'll have to put some time (through learning) and possibly some money (for ads) in the process.
The most problems beginners face are connected to
- poor offer choice,
- inconsistent traffic,
- no tracking.
So you'll have to learn how to choose a good offer to promote and then learn how to drive consistent traffic to it. And without propre tracking in place, you'll never know which methods really work and which are just burning your time and money.

It will not build you a brand
If you're planning to build a brand, affiliate marketing might not be the right way. Every successful brand you can think of has its own products, be it software, physical products or services.
It can help, though, because nothing is stopping you from promoting someone else's products as a part of your own offers, effectively widening your reach and area of operation.
It's not a business you control
While it may look like you're in control, think again. This is probably the one of the most important affiliate marketing cons.
You're not the product owner. If the vendor decides to stop selling the product, you're out. If they change the conditions, you can only adapt. Even the platform the product is sold at (Warrior+, JVZoo, ClickBank,...) can change rules and conditions over night, and you're out - or you have to adapt heavily.
In short, there are many factors that can ruin your campaigns before they even get off the ground properly. The only thing you're in control of is traffic and the way you promote it - advertising, blogging, etc.
You're not in control of this business.
Conclusion
There is more when it comes to affiliate marketing pros and cons, I've only mentioned a few I personally consider the most important.
If you're on your way to start a serious affiliate marketing business in any form, you should be aware of at least these few, simply in order to avoid unpleasant surprises in the future.

Frequently asked questions
Is Affiliate marketing easy to start?
Yes - at least relativelly to starting a business with product creation. You just need to apply to promote an offer, get your affiliate link and promote it via your channels (blogs, social accounts, YouTube, ...).
How much can I earn as an affiliate?
The amounts are actually hard to define, because they depend on so many factors, including your will to learn and do some work. But achieving a few hundred dollars per week is not that hard even for newbies, provided they learn and follow a proven system (like CB Profit Club or Master Affiliate Profits).
Are there any drawbacks of affiliate marketing?
Yes. It has its pros and cons, and you can see some of the most obvious ones in this post.
Do I have to create products to run affiliate marketing?
No. The only thing you should create (this is just a best practice advice) are landing pages (bridge pages) that will warn up your visitors before you send them to your affiliate links. Such a practice can easily 5x your conversion rates. If you want to step further, it's recommended that you create bonus packages for offers. This will raise your conversion rates even further.
How do I start affiliate marketing without any experience?
Start by reaching out to brands you already use, like WordPress plugins and themes vendors. Alternatively, join affiliate networks (like ClickBank, JVZoo, etc) and search for offers that are worth promoting.
The easiest way is to join a training where you can learn the basic & advanced tactics and get support from the community and trainers, as well as something proven to promote. An example of such training portals are The ClickBank Profit Club and Master Affiliate Profits, which are both free to join (with upgrades inside).
